Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Karen getting back in the swing of things following her excursion

Getting back into the swing of things this week was different after the long excursion! I was happy to go back to my internship. I was able to go to Gugulethu earlier this week and visit a couple organizations. I love learning about why certain places are established and how they got to where they are now. Every time I go into the community I learn more and more!

My internship as a whole is so wonderful- everybody in the office is so sweet and they've been nothing but awesome. I hope that one day I get to come back to Cape Town with my family and show them around/ show them the organization that I spent time with!

As for this weekend, it's been very relaxing. I feel like lately all of us students on this trip have been engaging in really good conversations. I also am comforted by the fact that we are all in this journey together, and that we can see something that might be racist or sexist and we can bring it up to talk about it. It's definitely going to be different at home because of society in general. I acknowledged racism and sexism before this trip, but now it's just more relevant and I can apply it to situations/ understand where people are coming from. At home, I don't see segregation as much as I do here. That's something that will stick with me.

Every day I realize that I need to continue to take in all of Cape Town before I leave. I am definitely getting anxious to go home (in a good way), but I am not trying to rush it.

Overall this weekend has been wonderful and I'm excited to spend the next two weeks with my internship/ doing a couple adventurous things for the last time.
