Welcome to Our Blog

Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Katherine has fallen in love with living in Rondebosch

This past week, Erica and I hosted an event for Prevention in Action alongside Mams and Koko, who did most of the talking in Xhosa with over 40 community members who participated. At first, we were worried that only around 10 women would show up to debate about community issues, but eventually our venue filled up. It was somewhat hectic with figuring out how to feed everyone since the caterer didn’t work out, but Mams and her family cooked for everyone. Next week, we have our next event: a community dialogue to continue the conversation that started at the debate. We feel much more prepared for this event after doing the first one and seeing what hurdles we came across.

Internships and class aside, I believe I’ve fallen in love with living in Rondebosch and exploring Cape Town. I have met so many interesting people and become accustomed to the pace of life here, which seems much more easygoing than back home. The public transportation is much less stressful for me now and I feel like I have the freedom to explore so many picturesque places, cafés, bars, and vintage clothes stores. My friends and I try to take advantage of events happening in town as much as possible, because we never regret spending some money to see something new. We talk more and more about how sad we will be to leave this place and our beautiful, comfortable house.
