Welcome to Our Blog

Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Karen exploring the community

Karen looking out over the city of Cape Town
This past week I have been given the opportunity to explore the community more. I was able to see a high school in one of the townships which me realize even more how well I we have it made at home. There is so much to be thankful for, when we are constantly complaining about what now seem to be "silly" things.

I also got to meet a lot of community members in Gugulethu through my internship (which is going really well!). I love to hear a different perspective on everything about Cape Town from people who live here and experience everything fully.

I've realized more and more that I want to interact with individuals more. I'm excited to go to UCT this Thursday and see many students on campus. I hope to engage in conversation with those who are from Cape Town. I think that the youth has a lot to say. We're constantly learning about Mandela and everything he did with that generation, but we don't ever hear about what is going on with the current youth.

My internship has taught me a lot about gangs, and how gang violence is intoxicating. I would love to study that further and see how youth/ gang violence can be minimized and eventually (hopefully) non-existent.
