Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Sarah honored and privileged to learn from those at her internship

Being an intern at the First Community Resource Centre is amazing, and it's only been a week.  I admit, I had some reservations at first given that I would be interacting with gangs and other at risk individuals in Hanover Park, but the people and programs involved are incredible.   Even though there are some language barriers as a result of my not understanding Afrikaans (although I am being taught new phrases every day), I have never felt so accepted and welcomed by a group of people before.  Those working at my internship are an actual family, who treat everyone with kindness, respect, and understanding, no matter a person's predicaments.  While my week consisted mainly of observing people's interactions and learning more about the numerous programs aimed toward bettering the community, I have learned so much.  I have learned what it means to see the best in people, in believing that there is good in all of us.  I have learned what it means to have the strength to defy the odds, of what is expected of you.  I have learned that through oppression, people have been broken, but others have risen, choosing a life where their goal is to raise others to their full potential.  I know I have yet to fully experience everything this program has to offer, but I am so excited about being a part of it.  From the CeaseFire boys, to Camp Joy, to the after school program, to the people of the community, I am honored and privileged to have the opportunity to work with all of them.  I can't wait to see what the rest of the weeks at my internship have in store!
