Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Sara excited to continue on this journey of learning and trying new things

With each day in Cape Town, there are a handful of new activities to do, new things to see, and also new things to learn. In the past few days I have started my internship at City Mission Educational Services, visited two wineries, gone to my first braii, explored a new beach, and lastly saw a local artist play at Kirstenbosch Gardens.

Out of all of these activities I would have to say the braii was the most exciting activity of them all. Ever since I arrived in Cape Town three weeks ago from today, people have mentioned the term “braii” over and over. I was unsure what to expect until I went to my first braii this past Saturday.  To say that it is the same as a barbeque would be an understatement.  It took place at one of my teacher’s houses, Vernon. When we entered his house he welcomed us with open arms and introduced us to some of his family. From the moment we walked into his house, I felt warm and welcome. The house immediately felt like home. After socializing for some time, the food was ready! This included different barbequed meat, fruit salad, garlic bread, sushi, pasta, and more. Everything was delicious! After the food we spent more time hanging out. When it was time to leave I already began looking forward to going to another braii!

Starting my internship I didn’t know what to expect. I went on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. The first couple days were slow because I didn’t have much to do, but when Wednesday came it became a bit more eventful. I was able to go to a community and help serve food to people in need. I was also able to meet the girls that live in the hostel next to the school, who I will hopefully be able to work more closely with through my time here!

These past few days have been amazing and everyday I become more and more grateful for everything I have in my life. I’m excited to continue this journey and to keep trying new things!
