Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Karen's having fun, learning, and excited to see where this adventure takes her

Last weekend was so much fun. Most of us went on the Garden Route, where we were able to do a variety of things. Friday we went on a safari ride, which was more fun than I expected. Our tour guide was full of so much information ( I learned so much about different species of animals!). I hope one day I can have a job where I learn about the environment and different species! I think that is fascinating. I also like how the reserve did not name the animals.. I think it’s important to keep wild life separate from pets/ naming animals. Wild animals don’t need names.

Saturday we were able to bungee jump off of the world’s tallest commercial bridge! It was actually quite terrifying. I realized i’m scared of heights, but it was such a good experience. I recommend everybody doing it, even if you’re scared!

We also were able to pet elephants on Saturday. It didn’t feel that ethical because the place we went to had the elephants do tricks for us.. which isn’t what they should be there for. I also don’t know how humane 2 acres of land for 5-9 elephants is… I think next time  decided to be interactive with animals, i’m going to have to do some more research to see what it’s all about.

As for Sunday, we went through the Cango Caves! It was so great. I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to fit between some of the tight spaces, but I did and it was such a great experience. It’s mind-blowing to think that we were in the center of a mountain…. planet Earth amazes me every single day. We should be nicer to a planet that gives so much to us :)

As for academics, school is going great! I’m really enjoying the classes and information i’ve been obtaining. I’m excited to see where this year takes me.
