Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Erica trying to absorb all the new things she is seeing, doing, and learning

This past weekend, my fellow co-educators and I went on a three-day tour of the Garden Route. It was nice to see another part of South Africa, and it felt refreshing to get away for a bit because the things I see and hear at my internship can be emotionally draining at times. With that being said, I highly value those experiences and I know that I’m getting a lot out of my internship. Anyways, the first day of our trip we went on a safari, an obstacle/zip line course, and spent some time at Pilli Pilli beach. Going to the beach turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the day because the view there was beautiful, and you could see the stars really well at night. My other two favorite parts of the weekend were getting to walk with elephants and doing a lemur encounter at a wildlife ranch. I’m very grateful for having the opportunity to tour the Garden Route, and I hope to see many different parts of South Africa during my time here.

It is also my second week working at Prevention in Action. The first week was a bit of a whirlwind because I was trying to absorb everything I was experiencing and everything was very new to me. The start of this week has been a bit slower in comparison. Mums (the leader of the organization) wants me and Katherine to organize a workshop about sexual assault and human rights for people in the community, and she also wants us to plan a march to raise awareness of gender based violence. I’m very excited to start working on these projects, and I hope they will allow me to connect with more members in the community.
