Welcome to Our Blog

Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Karen excited to see where this journey takes her

This week was the start of our internships! It was also one of the first times I realized how different it is here. Working at City Mission is not like any US school system, but I'm happy that there's so much we can do there. The kids clearly are eager to learn anything you have to share with them.

Today I was able to meet some of the faculty/staff, and see what they do every day. Every person  I spoke to seemed pretty eager to make City Mission Educational Services the best it can be. I respect the fact that this school will work with the students (or "learners" as they say), to make the learning environment suitable to each leaner individually. I think education should be taught in a flexible/adaptable way.

One of the professors taught me about how the school system is organized throughout the year.
My actual journey to the school was interesting. I've leaned that minibus taxis are not reliable. I've also learned that many people are very welcoming and helpful. There were people on the taxi who helped us communicate with the driver, which I appreciated. I think South Africa being the "crime capital of the world" needs some credit for being welcoming as well.

Overall I'm excited to see where this journey takes me.
