Welcome to Our Blog

Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Taylor exploring new places

This past weekend was super relaxing but we explored lots of new places in Cape Town!  On Thursday night, a bunch of us went to a play that one of Erica and Kat’s friends was performing in at the Baxter Theater.  The play was really interesting, it was only 45 minutes long, there were only 2 actors, and a majority of it was performed in Xhosa, so we were kind of lost.  Even so, we could all feel the emotions through the actors, and we even got to talk to the lead after the show and he told us more about the meaning and background of the play.  I am really glad that we all went together so we could experience something new and out of our comfort zones!

On Friday, Karen, Rachele, and I spent the day volunteering at our activist project, an animal hospital in Bridgetown.  I spent some time assisting the vet during surgeries, which was fun and interesting, even though there was kind of a lot of blood.  The rest of the time, I mostly just helped with little things around the hospital like moving animals from surgery and cleaning up.  It was nice to feel like I was making a difference with the animals in the area, especially since I see so many stray and sick dogs when I walk to and from Eros every day.
That night, the three of us decided to go to Bloubergstrand Beach to eat dinner and watch the sunset.  It was so beautiful, but it was so windy! We were getting blown over by the wind while trying to take pictures, and sand was blowing everywhere, but it was still an amazing sunset and perfect view of Table Mountain.

On Saturday, Sarah, Laura, Anna, Karen, and I had a great day at Kirstenbosch Gardens!  We went to Old Biscuit Mill in the morning to eat breakfast and get lunch to bring to the gardens, and then spent the rest of the day taking pictures and exploring at Kirstenbosch.  We walked around so many different trails and saw such a wide array of plants, flowers, and trees.  It was the perfect day to spend there, and we got a bunch of awesome pictures. It was so relaxing to spend our Saturday surrounded by nature and away from the usual loud sounds and pollution of the city!
