Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Karen's exciting week

This past week has really been exciting. I hiked Table Mountain for the first time with Rachele and Mteto. It was so hot and exhausting but at the same time it was so much fun. I'm glad we got to see that view. I also went to my internship and visited Silverstream high again. I've learned more about gang violence and the territorial aspects of gangs, and youth gangs. There is so much for me to learn about especially since gang violence has recently gotten progressively worse.

I also had the opportunity to talk to more people in the community about their view on Nelson Mandela, and about the different race categorizations in South Africa. I've learned that there are classes within each category of people as well. There is so much to learn about the community here.
Aside from my internship, my activist projects has been so great. I'm working at the PDSA with Rachele and Taylor and am having a blast. This last week I got to sit in on more surgical components of the organization. I'm slowly becoming more adapted to the whole surgery/ blood/guts scene. I also love everyone that we work with, they are all so nice and again, the information I am learning from them is great!! I can't wait to see what we can do for fundraising for them.

As for aspects that relate to some classes, i actually have noticed advertisements more lately. You can see who the ad is targeted towards, and what kind of message the ad is spreading to others. Advertising will continue to amaze me.
