Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Karen had an absolute blast on her homestay weekend

This weekend we were able to spend it at Ocean View! I had an absolute blast. Bernie was our mom for the weekend. She actually reminded me so much of my own mother. She is kindhearted and cares more about other's than herself. She also told me and Anna that we are more than welcome to come visit them again.

I'm grateful for the experiences and conversations i've had this weekend. We were able to meet about 18-20 young school children. We went to the beach and did a bunch of games and ate lunch. It was so wonderful to see how happy and thankful the students were. We also went to a pre-school and got to mingle with young kids! They were all fascinated by our hair. We played and played all day with the kids! I have no idea how the two women take care of all of those children every day! They sure have patience and a huge heart full of love.

This weekend we also went ballroom dancing, I met two beautiful individuals. One's name was Tia, and the other was Luke. They both asked me what i'm going to school for/what my interests are. Tia and I actually got to talking about police, which was interesting because I was given a different perspective. We also talked a little bit about her dreams in life. I hope she truly fulfills her goals!

I also found myself having informative conversations with my host family about police, church, Ocean View compared to other townships. and overall the community that is formed there. I'm more than thankful for everything I have learned. I feel like so many tourists come to South African and only do "touristy" things. They never truly get to talk to people who live here, or people who have strong opinions about social issues going on.

This weekend has made me realize that if I ever go to another country, I will not form a solid opinion about that country until I visit many local places, and until I talk to many local people. South Africa is huge! I can't imagine the information that i'm still yet to learn, and the places i'm yet to see.
