Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Laura's final week of orientation

This week was pretty fun! We started off with wine tours and a braai. The wine tour was very informative, and we got the opportunity to taste some wines. I don’t like reds, fyi. We ended Saturday with a braai at Vernon’s house, which was probably one of my favorite parts of the trip thus far. A braai, for those who don’t know, is essentially a barbecue where everyone invites their family and friends. It was a very chill environment, and a good place to bond with my fellow co-educators and Vernon’s family and friends.

Parks, the local public transportation pro that helped us with orientation, brought his family and friends. One thing he said particularly stood out to me. As he was barbecuing the meat, he was telling me how happy all of us make him. He was saying how he is generally a very happy person and being surrounded by all of us happy people was one of his favorite things. Parks has had such an impact on all of us already. Not only has he shown us how to use public transportation, which is an intimidating thing here, but he also has brought this amazing energy with him everyday. He is always smiling and always ready to answer questions. It was nice to know that we were having such an impact on him, just as he was having an impact on us.

We ended the weekend with an exciting excursion to Muizenberg and a concert at Kirstenbosch. Muizenberg was complicated since the train kept breaking down and we were already on a strict time limit. But! We made it and that was what mattered. The concert was awesome. It was a breathtaking view that I don’t think I can accurately describe through writing.

We also started our internships this week. Mine has been a bit slow, to be honest. I’m placed at The Big Issue. Vernon emphasized that we will have to make use of our downtime, and I’m really trying to do that. The second day was a bit better than the first, but still a little boring. I’m hoping it will pick up because it really is an amazing organization that I think I could definitely help! I am trying to interact with more people everyday and make connections. Unfortunately, most of the vendors speak Xhosa and my Xhosa is not the greatest yet.

This weekend we’re going on the Garden Route and I am SO excited! Mainly because I want to pet elephants. Many pictures to come!
