Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Sara W finds with each day comes a new adventure, a new face, and new memories

Sara & Ashley greeting a new friend
With each day in Cape Town, I fall in love with the city more and more. Last weekend I went on the Garden Route. The Garden Route was filled with many firsts for me. I went swimming in the Indian Ocean for the first time. Also, I went on a safari, did a zip line adventure course, went to a bar bare foot, walked hand in trunk with an elephant, crawled through caves, and went on the world’s tallest bungee jump bridge all for the first time. The Garden Route was amazing and I am hoping I will have enough saved up by the end of the trip to do it once more!

After getting back from the fun packed weekend it was time to go back and see what City Mission had planned for me on Monday. At my internship this week I got some exciting news! I learned that I am tutoring six potential NBA football players for the SATs. There are six student football players that go to a local high school called Bridgetown High who were offered scholarships to universities in the US. The universities agreed if those students get high enough scores on their SATs, they can go play football for them and in return get full scholarships for their first three years of school. I am eager to meet these students in the upcoming week at my internship and to start helping them prepare for the SATs. I think this will be a rewarding experience and I am glad am able to help because I have had the advantage of taking the SATs before.

I also had a few firsts in this past weekend. I got my first tattoo, went to Old Biscuit Mill, and hiked Lion’s Head. I got a tattoo of a sun on the back of my neck that has a smile and also has a compass as the rays. The sun is symbolic of a representation of the higher self, while the compass indicates my love for travelling. Next, Old Biscuit Mill was a lot of fun and had great food, music, and souvenirs. Lastly, Lion’s Head was the perfect hike and I want to start doing it at least once a week. All of these events were amazing and I want to do them all again already!

With each and every day comes a new adventure, a new face, and new memories here in Cape Town. I am so excited for the days to come and I am trying to hold on to each day that I have here. I am grateful for everything I have done since I have arrived and look forward to making more memories in this beautiful city.
