Welcome to Our Blog

Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Rav has one of her favorite weekends with a bit of activism during the week

This past weekend has been one of my favorite weekends here in Cape Town! A bunch of us girls went to Ultra South Africa, where electric dance music healed my soul and I was allowed to dance all day and night long. I love concerts and to have such a cool EDM festival happen here in Town, I was ecstatic!! I danced with everyone, met some amazing people from South Africa and all around the world.

Sunday, we went to Kirstenbosch Gardens for another summer sunset concert. The Soil performed; an award winning a cappella group based in South Africa. Everyone needs to check them out, their songs are full of feel good lyrics and music, and stunning vocals with beatboxing. It was a great end to the day. After the concert I checked out Camps Bay and Clifton Beaches at night, which are so beautiful. In the distance there was a wild fire that illuminated the whole side of the mountain. The fire was insanely large, and it looked beautiful from the distance, even though I knew that the fire was destroying the forests.

Last week was a great week for protesting! Again, I protested alongside with Right2Know at Parliament for the budget hearing day. We marched in downtown for the end of the secret nuclear deal that the South African government is trying to push. The activism here is so beautiful, where people rejoice and sing and dance. They perform their struggles as people, using art and music to display their feelings. I would love to take that South African activist spirit and bring it to the States. I believe that use of art in activism makes a stronger sense of community, that shows resilience and strength but also love for one another.
