Welcome to Our Blog

Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Katherine's staying active to have the most full and enriching experience

Taylor & Katherine
Over the weekend, 16 of us toured the coast of South Africa and stopped at various wildlife reserves to see lions, elephants, cheetahs, rhinos, hippos, lemurs, and other African animals that I feel like you have to see when you're visiting here. I jumped into the Indian Ocean and was delighted at it's beauty and warmth. I noticed that the areas we traveled through were definitely predominately white and upper class, and the craft fair and shopping centers we visited were populated by white South Africans and European tourists, mostly. It felt as if we were in a different country from Cape Town, and seemed to resemble Maine or Rhode Island in the summer.

We returned from our weekend and had our second week of internships, which for Erica and I was a productive week of planning events for Prevention in Action to create dialogues between community members and stakeholders in order to find and work towards solutions for sexual assault and security in Khayelitsha. Soon we will draft proposals and budgets for a debate, dialogue event, and a weekend at a camp for women. After a week of being unsure if I'll be able to actually aid the communities in Khayelitsha, I'm glad we have plans for real events.

This weekend we have a few days off, for the first time, and I'm excited to explore thrift stores and do some hiking. I can't believe we've already been here for a month and I know I have to stay active to have the most full and enriching experience I can.
