WGSS 3998 H. Variable Topics: Comparative Analysis of Race and Gender (3
Honors Credits)
Using a
consensus decision making model you will work together to determine when the
class will meet. This course explores the construction and
reproduction of gender and race inequality in South Africa & the U.S by
studying the social position and relations of women and men (political,
economic, cultural and familial) and by analysing the diversity of women’s and
men’s experiences across class, race, sexualities, cultures, and regions. (This course will be counted as WGSS 3894 for
those completing the internship as WGSS 3891)
Unless otherwise noted, weekends can be used to rest, relax, study, make new friends and/or
explore Cape Town and the surrounding areas. However, you may
not rent a car or leave the country. Most also find it best to set aside time
on Fridays to complete activist projects. The full description and timeline for
these projects are noted on the syllabus but general overview for project is:
Taking
this course while living and working in South Africa provides opportunities to
increase awareness of a wide range of social issues such as: violence against
women, poverty, hunger, discrimination, HIV/AIDS, as well as many other health,
social, political, educational, environmental, and economic forms of injustice.
When studying such issues it is not uncommon to become angered, guilt-ridden,
frustrated, overwhelmed, and/or disheartened by the magnitude of the problems
and how much needs to be done to begin to alleviate such conditions.
Having the opportunity to intern at an organization designed to address one or
more of these social circumstances provides a ready-made answer to the often
challenging question—“what can be done about this?” However, as you have
and will continue to discover, there is always more to be done. For many,
becoming involved in one area opens the door to other possibilities of working
for positive social change. With that in mind, this project is intended to
offer one additional opportunity for you to DO SOMETHING to address one issue
beyond the scope of your current internship about which you are interested,
concerned, and/or passionate. Most people choose to complete their
projects on Fridays but the choice is yours. However, the day and time
you commit to this project must not interfere in any way with your
internship or other classes. You also must be able to arrange safe
& reliable transport to and from the place in which you decide to
volunteer.
