Welcome to Our Blog

Welcome to Our Blog
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no narratives to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey. As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of remarkable UConn students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Laura T impressed by enthusiasm of former participants

Hi everyone! My name is Laura Turner and I am a junior here at UConn. I am completing an Individualized Major of International Relations, focusing on Human Rights and the Middle East. I am also minoring in Human Rights and am planning on adding a minor in Psychology as well. Coming to college I was hoping to have the chance to study abroad, as I love traveling and living in a different country for several months is an amazing opportunity. As I was exploring the study abroad website, I saw this program in Cape Town and knew that I wanted to go. The opportunity to have a human rights internship and to work on an activist project while in another country fits perfectly with my major and minor and my future goals. Though the internship I will gain valuable experience in my field of interest, and will be able to help others in need. I am also excited to learn about a new, unique culture that is different from what I am used to. In addition, everyone I know who has participated in the program has absolutely loved it, calling it one of the most incredible experiences of their lives. The enthusiasm of past participants and the huge impact it has had on them convinced me that I had to apply.

I am incredibly excited that I have been accepted to the program, as I have been thinking about going abroad for a while. As the reality hits me that I am actually going I have definitely become nervous to be away for so long in a country so far away, but I know that it is the perfect way to step outside of my comfort zone and that immersing myself in a new culture is the best way to expand my knowledge of the world. It is also comforting to know that I will be with a group of UConn students and I cannot wait to explore Cape Town and South Africa with everyone.
